"Move Your Mountains"

What are the first thoughts that come to your mind when you hear the word “mountain”? Do you think of a rough and heightened alp that people climb? Or do you see a snow-capped peak with someone skiing down the slope? Do you visualize the mountain and its tops, or do you see it from the distance and wonder why do some people enjoy climbing mountains, and how they get down from them?

Let’s dive a little deeper into the word mountain for a moment. The word mountain is defined as a large natural elevation of the earth’s surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level; a large steep hill characterized by remoteness and inaccessibility. Another definition for mountain is a large pile or quantity of something.

When I hear the word mountain, I think of something large and in the way. The word that automatically comes to my mind is “obstacle”. Why? Because of a mountain’s remoteness and inaccessibility; I think of it as something that will be in the way of me getting to my destination. I immediately visualize a roadblock of some sorts. Did the word “obstacle” come to your mind when the word mountain was initially brought up? After reading that…...what about now?

So, let’s take a moment and reflect on our lives. I am quite sure there have been times where you have had an obstacle or two thrown directly at you and it completely threw you off track. I know that I have had a few big ones come to where I had to make a dramatic halt. And I am quite sure that I will have a few more that will come at me in this journey we call life.

One recent mountain for me was having to overcome being sick and in the hospital for over a month. Why? Because, I had failed to listen to the warnings from my doctors and neglected my health in the process. From taking care of our kids, running the household while my husband was away with the military, working my own full time job, helping my parents, and juggling my businesses outside of my full time job, I had NO time for myself. I didn’t care about my health nor did I take care of myself as I should have. I knew my habits were not healthy, but I felt as though nothing would get accomplished if I didn’t do everything. Carrying this on day after day, week after week, and so forth, my body got worn out and eventually shut down.

Being in the hospital was a humbling experience. I was so used to doing everything for everybody that I didn’t even take the time out to take care of myself. I had to reflect on my life and really figure out if this was the path I wanted to continue on. If I’m not able to take care of myself, how was I going to take care of my kids? Better yet, who would be able to keep everything running? That was my mountain!!! It was huge. Matter a fact, it was enormous. I didn’t think that there would be a way around it. And at that point in my life, I definitely couldn’t climb over the mountain; I was just too weak. The mountain had taken all of my strength. It became an obstacle that I felt powerless against.

I felt powerless and almost defeated until I began to pray. I felt weakened until I began to speak to my mountain. Yes!! I spoke to my mountain, and I told it to move!!! “Death and life are in the power of the tongue. And those who love it will eat its fruit.”Proverbs 18:21 No longer would I allow that mountain to keep me in bondage. People climb mountains, they ski down mountains, and they cross mountains. So this mountain would be no different. Either way, I was moving this mountain out of my way. It would no longer continue to be an obstacle in my life.

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But, when you are tempted, he will provide a way out so that you can stand under it.” Corinthians 10:13. God will never give us more than we can bear. That was another part of my experience that was humbling. I had to learn that our Father is always there for us, regardless of how big the situation is. I also learned that He can and will put us in situations and circumstances to draw us closer to Him. And not only Him, but to others that can help us as well. He allows our tests to become our testimonies. He allows our mess to become the message for others. Isn’t He such an AWESOME GOD!!!

My hospital scare really taught me how easy it is to lose ourselves when trying to live for everyone else. However, I was determined to get over this mountain and continue to be the best I can be. Once I was released from the hospital, I made sure that my first new goal was to implement Self Care into my daily life.
